What to Wear? - Temple Wear Guide
1. General Rule – Shoulders and Knees: Men and women should keep their shoulders and knees covered at all times. To avoid: Sleeveless tops, tank tops, shorts, mini-skirts, and see-through clothing.
2. Women: A decent and comfortable outfit such as a saree or salwar kameez is recommended. Alternatives: Long skirts or loose trousers with a simple blouse or t-shirt are acceptable. Remember: Always carry a large shawl or scarf in your bag. It can be a lifesaver when you need to quickly cover your shoulders or wrap it around your waist.
3. Men: A traditional vesti (white dhoti) is respected. Alternatives: Jeans or long trousers (without rips) paired with a collared shirt or t-shirt. Removing shirts: In most Hindu kovils (such as Munneshwaram or Koneswaram), men are expected to remove their shirt or t-shirt before entering the inner sanctum.
4. Footwear (Important): Shoes must be removed at the temple entrance. Tip: Pavements and sand can become very hot during the afternoon, so carrying thick socks will help protect your feet while inside the temple premises.
5. Colors: While not a strict rule, light pastel shades or white are traditionally preferred in spiritual places in Sri Lanka, as they symbolize purity and help reflect heat.

Frequently asked questions
1. Does the tour have access to vegetarian food?
Yes. We realize that there are several pilgrims on the Ramayana Trail with extreme dietary conditions. Your personal driver-guide is familiar with the hottest pure-veg places to have meals on the way, between Kandy and Trincomalee, so that you have appropriate opportunities to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
2. Do the temples have particular dress codes?
Yes, strict dress codes apply. Men as well as women have to keep their shoulders and knees covered.
In most Hindu Kovils (such as Munneshwaram or Koneswaram), men are usually made to take off their shirts before getting into the inner sanctum.
Women: Women are required to wear modest clothes such as saree, salwar kameez, or long trousers in combination with a sleeved top.
How strenuous is the inclination to Ravana Cave?
The Ravana Cave is a visit which requires one to ascend about 600-700 steep steps. It involves an average amount of fitness. In case you are travelling in the company of old relatives and family members who are unable to climb, they can rest in the car or at the bottom as others go out.
4. Is it possible to look at the Ram Setu (the Bridge of Adam)?
The Ram Setu consists of courses of limestone. We visit the nearest viewing point Mannar/Talaimannar. The visibility is affected by the tide and weather. You may see the first shoals stretched down into the sea, but you cannot go all the way over to India!
5. Is the package cost inclusive of temple donations or poojas (₹40,449)?
No, the package amount includes transport, lodging and breakfast. Any financial contributions (Dakshina), Pooja tickets or other special rites you want to carry out in the temples are self-financing and can be handed over at the temple counters.
